Greatshield Madbeat Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Greatshield Madbeat:

After progressing from the main story quest, you'll eventually reach the second area where the boss resides. This fortress is overrun by goblins, and there are a couple of hostages in the area that need saving. As you continue following the area ahead, a short cutscene will play out and the Greatshield Madbeat will step out from the gate. Throughout the fight, enemy mobs will appear occasionally, and you'll have to deal with them while dealing with the Greatshield Madbeat. Two Goblin Soldiers will also near the end of the fight, which are stronger than common goblin mobs.

The Greatshield Madbeat's weakness is at the back, as the colossal shield tanks damage from the front. Make sure to always aim for the back when performing your attacks and spread out the party to split its focus. When it initiates its Shield Charge, swiftly dodge or run on either side to avoid the charge, as getting hit will knock you down. Its Shield Drop move will have a red indicator to show you where it'll drop, keep an eye on the marked area to avoid the attack. The Shield Slam can be avoided easily, you can dodge around the boss when it slams its shield onto the ground, but the amount of times it slams its shield may be random, sometimes it slams only twice, and sometimes it slams it four to six times, If it only slams twice, you can just dodge around the boss and reposition yourself, but if it tries to slam more than twice, it's best to dodge away, as you can only dodge three times in a row before becoming vulnerable for an attack. The Greatshield Madbeat will also swing its sword three times, time your dodges correctly, or dodge away from the boss to avoid the sweeping sword strikes.

As you've noticed, this boss has a yellow bar of meter just below its health bar, and once this fills up, the Greatshield Madbeat will go into Overdrive Mode and Bloodthirst will take effect. When they are in this phase, Skybound Arts will be rendered ineffective against them while also reducing all the damage they take, some bosses will also have access to special attacks that are different from their base form. This phase will only be temporary but it can happen more than once during a boss fight.

One of its most challenging new attacks is the Shieldquake Assault, this move requires precise movements in order to dodge incoming attacks. Once he goes into overdrive, immediately maintain a safe distance, as he'll swing his shield around, clipping anyone within its range. It'll then be followed by a ground slam where shockwaves will follow through the ground. If you are within the vicinity of the shockwave, you can simply jump over it. After slamming his shield on the ground, he'll proceed to scoop up rocks and hurl them toward the air, be vigilant for red indicators, indicating the trajectory of rock projectiles. He'll do this sequence three times, and then he'll proceed to target one member of the team, which includes you, and leap into the air and slam its shield on the ground. There will also be an indicator as to where he'll drop, so avoid the marked area to avoid taking damage.

The rest of his attacks during this phase are quite simple to get around with, it has a running charge similar to the Shield Charge, only this time he's not wielding his shield. You can move away or dodge at the right time to avoid this attack. Its Colossal Swing is just a standard sword combo, just anticipate when the sword swings around, or better to just step away and create some distance and land a counterattack after the successive strikes. The Sword Slam is similar to the Shield Drop, where he jumps into the air before slamming his colossal sword on the ground.

Throughout the battle, capitalize on Gran's skills and coordinate attacks with your companions to maximize your damage. Remember to aim for the rear and stay alert for occasional enemy mobs and swiftly dispatch them to maintain your focus on the Greatshield Madbeat. Perform Link attacks as much as you can to trigger Link Time and unleash your powerful attacks at the rear. Make use of your Skybound Arts and follow up with a Chain Burst for additional damage.
