How Do Companions Work in GBF Relink?
Companions are non-playable characters who assist players in combat by providing a buff to allies, debuffing enemies, dealing additional damage, and various utilities. One example of this is Lyria conjuring a protective barrier around the party to protect them from boss attacks. In addition to the 4-member party, a companion will join players as a Guest, and their icon will be listed just below the HP bars of all members. Players will not take control of companions but they will stay close with the party during specific battles and portions of the game. Companions are not to be confused with Allies.
Lyria
Girl in Blue
"A young girl, shrouded in mystery, who holds the power to control primal beasts. The Erste Empire coveted this ability and secretly held her captive until the guard assigned to protect her, Katalina, engineered her escape. The empire pursued them to the forests of Zinkenstill, which is where you encountered the pair. You tried to protect Lyria and became fatally wounded. Sensing a life slipping away, Lyria linked her life force to yours, binding two fates forevermore."
Lyria is a character who first appeared during the 3rd Anniversary of Granblue Fantasy released almost 7 years ago. Players can opt to complete a side story called What Makes the Sky Blue to unlock Lyria who can offer support in combat. In the original game, she features strong Charge Attack damage that can boost her own Charge Bar. What makes Lyria exceptionally good in combat is that she has an adaptive combat feature where her element is determined by the Main Character.
As a companion in Granblue Fantasy Relink, Lyria will join the party as a guest companion. Their icon will not have an HP bar, unlike other playable characters, or Allies. This means that players will practically have no control over her, and she will be joining players in combat. Lyria provides support to parties by creating a giant bubble to deflect damage, most of which will be supporting the party and for summoning primal beasts such as Bahamut.

Lyria automatically joins the party upon starting the game and for the majority of the main campaign chapters, Lyria will be in the group as a guest companion.
Rolan
Transient Mr. Fix-It
"So, I bet you're wondering who I am. I work for the church of Folca, mostly as a vicar. You see. I'm kind of a Mr. Fix It. handling all the odd jobs after chrch."
Rolan is a new character added to the Granblue Fantasy franchise, he is a vicar and a so-called "Mr. Fix-It" who handles what he calls "odd" jobs within and beyond Folca. The townsfold trust his nature, coming to him with personal problems, broken furniture, and other requests. He is a skilled swordsman in his own right, and is capable of exterminating threats. Yet for how much the townsfolk treat him like a longtime neighbor, they don't know much about his life before Folca.
Rolan is another guest companion in GBF Relink where he mostly provides insights and verbal support in combat. But in some chapters of the main campaign, Rolan will in fact join in combat where he can attack and provide other moves that will benefit the party.

Players first encounter Rolan in Chapter 1: The Western Frontier and he will simultaneously join the party as a guest companion in various chapters of the story.
Vyrn
Little Red Dragon
"Your bestest pal, this little fellow has stuck with you through thick and thin, and he's not about to let a little thing like a death-defying journey stop him now. Some might even call it fate."
Vyrn is a character from the original game who first made its appearance in 2014. Vyrn retains its appearance of having wings that resemble a small dragon and can be seen carrying a magical book or a backpack. In the original game, Vyrn somehow serves as your guide and will lead the Main Character to fulfill their destiny.
Vyrn can coordinate with Lyria to unleash support skills in combat but he primarily functions as a waypoint to pinpoint objectives for Main Quests or Side Quests. By pressing a corresponding button, Vyrn will fly towards an objective marker and shine a light to help you indicate where you need to go next. Apart from that, Vyrn also provides verbal support by pointing out some combat tips in certain situations, so listen to what he has to say as it may help you in difficult encounters.

Vyrn automatically joins the party at the start of the game and will always accompany The Captain through exploration and combat.
