Players encounter Griffin while exploring the deserts of Dahli Relicbelt. The Griffin is a boss that fights predominantly in the air. It has a number of aerial maneuvers and dives and can produce small tornados and dust devils, but still spends a lot of time hovering in place, leaving it open to attacks. As it dives and thrusts itself through the air, these maneuvers are actually low enough to get you or knock you over if you are caught in its path. You will not be able to slip underneath so be prepared to dodge to either side. This will also put you in the optimum position to begin attacking it from behind since there will be a brief recovery period and the Griffin will hover in place.

Use Link attacks and combos and play offensively in between attacks while the Griffin is within reach to maximize damage. If you have ranged attackers on your team, take advantage of them to draw the Griffin to the ground. If your team manages to play aggressively enough, you will quickly be able to knock it out of the air extending the window that it is vulnerable. Once the Griffon is on the ground, it can begin implementing some ground attacks such as a Wing sweep.

Once it reaches Overdrive, its attacks will expand and it will be able to form tornados of all sizes that will draw nearby characters in and lead them into dangerous blast zones. This can occur with its back-to-back diving combos, so you will need to be especially agile during this phase, dodging side to side to stay clear of both the formed tornados, blast areas, and the dive attacks of the Griffin. For the larger tornado attack, you'll need to wait for it to fully complete before approaching. Wait for each window in between attacks then approach aggressively. The Griffin will begin to back up in response. You'll be able to use your Link attack here or take advantage of a Skybound Art. Work with the whole party and perform the Skybound Art together to deal a successful full Burst which would quickly deplete its hp or Mode bar and put him in break if he was on Overdrive. The Griffin reacts to aggression and can easily be knocked. Take advantage of all windows in between its large attacks. Keep behind and be relentless with your attacks to knock it down often while extending its vulnerable state to maximize damage and quickly defeat it.

Griffin Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Aerial Thrust A swift horizontal thrust through the air as the Griffin shoots itself forward like a torpedo, damaging those in its path.  The Griffin can get quite low for this maneuver; almost like a dive so you won't be able to slip underneath it and you'll need to dodge the dive on either side of the maneuver.
Claw A basic claw attack where the Griffin swipes or claws forward Block or dodge this attack. This can also be avoided by remaining to the side or behdnd the Griffin.
Wing 360 Sweep There is a brief indication of this maneuver before the follow-through as the Griffin draws back its wing before the 360 spin. This can knock back anyone within its general vicinity.  Watch for the wind-up just before it begins the sweep. Back up immediately so that you can get in a better position to run in immediately after the.
Multi-Tornado - Whirlwind The Griffin will make a series of dives that will form a number of small tornados that characters can get caught in.  Both the dive and the tornados can be very damaging and can occur in a quick combo so you'll need to keep moving while this attack is ongoing to avoid both the tornado and the dives.
Overdrive Tornado This is a double attack that comes in two parts. The Griffin can fly up in the air forming one large tornado creating a wind current and drawing nearby characters while forming damaging blasts surrounding the large tornado. These blast zones will be marked with a circle before the blast occurs.  Its easy to get cause in the current of the tornado which will lure you into the blast zones formed around it. You will need to focus on running away while avoiding the marked blast zone. These areas will be marked briefly before the blast, giving you a chance to avoid them.
Dust Devil throw The Giffin can throw a series of tornados forward.  These tornadoes will spread out as they are thrown away from it, and you should be able to maneuver in between them as they make their way out.
