The encounter with the Ancient Dragon occurs during a side quests with additional optional objectives and a time limit.

  • Time Limit: 30:00
  • Clear within 8 minutes
  • Don't enter critical condition more than 1 time
  • Clear within 4 minutes

When facing the Dragon, you can take all melee strength members to approach the Dragon and focus your attacks on the front two legs or its hindlegs. Most attacks will have some visual indicators before the attacks such as the fire in its mouth or the raising of its legs or claws which will give you a brief moment to react and reposition yourself accordingly. The Ancient Dragon will be able to pounce around the arena, which is a maneuver that should not affect you if you stay close to the Dragon's feet. Make sure to dodge its claw swipes since getting caught in this attack will knock you back. If you stay close enough, or to the side, you should be able to avoid most of its fire attacks that are mostly dealt just in space ahead of the Ancient Dragon. Most of the Ancient Dragon's attack patterns will repeat and are basic, so once you get used to where to position your character and how to anticipate which attack will come and when to dodge, you can repeat the same strategies until the Ancient Dragon reaches Overdrive.

The Ancient Dragon will use some of the same basic attacks in Overdrive but will have access to larger AoE attacks. These large AoE attack areas will be marked on the ground, displaying the areas that should be avoided before they begin to ignite. The AoE attacks will begin by displaying bright yellow circle marks on the ground. One large one will surround the Ancient Dragon, and smaller attack areas will surround it. You will need to clear the area before the blast. Once the Ancient Dragon goes into overdrive, it may also be joined by smaller Wyvern dragons that will be able to deal some of the same basic attacks as the Ancient Dragon such as Claw and Tail swipes. Continue the process and keep running into the dragon and attack it from below to deplete its HP. Play aggressively while it is in overdrive to achieve the break then take the team to use their Skybound Arts one at a time to achieve the Full Burst and maximize your damage any opportunity you can until the boss fight is cleared.

Ancient Dragon Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Fire Breath Shot A singular fiery linear projectile shot from the mouth of the Ancient Dragon This attack shoots out in one clear direction. The Ancient Dragon's mouth will start to swell with fire as its head lowers giving players ample time to dodge out of the way if you're at mid-range.
Fire Breath Sweep An extended breath of fire that can sweep side to side  Run to the side of the dragon to avoid the range of the fire
Pounce The Ancient Dragon briefly lowers itself in a pounce position before it leaps into a new nearby spot in the arena.  The Ancient Dragon will be facing in the direction before the leap. Players will want to clear the area or stay close to avoid getting caught in the landing of the pounce.
Stamp This is a similar move to its pounce, but it is done in place and can be dealt with repeatedly.  As soon as the Ancient Dragon lifts both front legs up, immediately back away from its general vicinity otherwise you may get caught and trampled repeatedly.
Tail Swipe The Ancient Dragon rotates to swipe its tail  Dodge back or through the attack. The swipe is slow-moving, allowing you to avoid it easily.
Claw Swipe The Ancient Dragon lifts its claws just before a large swift swipe Players too close to the claw will get knocked back. As soon as you see the claw lift, dodge back or distance yourself from the Dragon.
Overdrive
Multi-AoE blast A number of blast circles will appear surrounding the Ancient Dragon marked in yellow rings, with the largest one just beneath the dragon itself, surrounded by smaller attack rings. Each ring will have a smaller expanding ring that will indicate went the blast will occur. Once the inner ring makes contact with the outer ring, the whole marked area will ignite. These circles will ignite and send a blast upwards one at a time. As soon as the circles appear, run out of range before the blasts begin. You won't have to completely run out of the entire attack area. There will be gaps between the rings. Finding a safe spot to stand until the rings are cleared will keep you safe.
