Players will encounter Vulkan Bolla in the Phondam Isles in an arena surrounded by lava. Players must be wary of their position since during the fight, Vulkan Bolla will also have the ability to temporarily cover parts of the ground in a layer of lava that will inflict the Burn Status Effect. Take advantage of any attacks with water and use any Skills that debuff the Vulkan Bolla, since this will be a long and daunting encounter.

Your offensive positions will be limited and will progressively decrease since Vulkan Bolla is positioned in the lava and has the ability to cover areas of the ground in lava. The reachable areas of Vulkan Bolla are also limited forcing you to take a stance near the edge of the arena to be able to reach either the main torso area of the Vulkan Bolla or his hands when Vulkan Bolla rests it on the edge of the platform. As the fight progresses positioning your characters in a safe spot will prove to be more and more challenging as lava fills the platform and inflicts burn which causes damage over time.

At the start of the fight, head directly toward the body of the Vulkan Bolla. The fight starts with a few basic maneuvers and hand slams. The Vulkan Bolla will be able to swiftly maneuver around the arena and leave pools of lava in its path. During this period, you will still be able to quickly dodge out of harm's way as soon as you notice the upcoming maneuver. Continue to position your strong melee characters directly below the torso of the Vulkan Bolla. Take an offensive approach and have your characters attack offensively before you will need to switch to a preservation mode while finding a safe spot in the arena. For a while, the Vulkan Bolla will continue to rely on these basic moves and leave pools of lava. If you're at a mid-ranged distance, the Vulkan Bolla may reach out and slam its hand or switch to its ranged attack by shooting out a fireball. Both attacks will show signs of the maneuver before the follow-through. Watch for its wind up and dodge out of the slam landing area, but stay close since you can also target its hand once it makes contact with the ground. There will be a brief recovery period after this attack. Link your attacks when you can. The Vulkan Bolla is also weakest to water attacks so make use of them during this phase. The second phase will begin with a cutscene.

Phase 2

This is where you can start aggressively using your Skybound Arts before the arena increases in difficulty. As a team perform a successive Skybound Art one after the other to trigger the FullBurst and knock it down. This will temporarily render him useless and vulnerable to any incoming attacks.

If the Skybound Arts, the arena may turn into a bed of chaos with fire blasting through the crack of the platform followed by a flood of magma that can cover a whole section of the arena. This is a large-scale attack. A pulsing indicator will blink over the selected platform before the flood engulfs. This is your sign to reposition to a nearby clear platform before it is flooded. Remaining in this platform will inflict burn and cause high damage over time. During this period, you will need to be quick, and tentative since the Vulkan Bolla can quickly select another section of the arena to target and cover additional areas with spew of magma, limiting the safe areas. Whenever possible Attack together to activate link time. At about half health, phase 3 will begin.

Phase 3

Phase 4 begins with a giant ball of fire in the center of the arena. Balls of fiery rock and magma will continue to fall over the arena. The landing zones will be marked on the ground so you know which areas to avoid. The magma in the arena will begin to the and the only platforms available will be towards the edge and center. Head towards the main body of the monster and continue targeting its claws or its face. The platform where it rests will not sink. Aim for the crystals on its claws and the head. Destroy each of them to slowly shrink the fireball. When you navigate through this arena, You'll need to hop along the edges. Other parts of the  Vulkan Bolla will be resting on the raised clear platforms. Attack each part enough until a scene shows that the ball of fire disappears.

Once you have successfully gotten rid of the ball of fire, you can focus your attention on the main body of the beast again.  Continue to approach the body of the beast offensively. This fight will be long, so you will have the opportunity to Link your attack again to try to perform another Full Burst.  knock the beast over and eventually finish it off. If the fight is not completed, continue the pattern and aim for its torso, head, and claws when they are within reach. Make sure your support characters do their job in keeping everyone's health balanced throughout the fight. Be persistent with your attack and slowly but surely, you'll continue to have opportunities to Chain Burst and link your attacks, repeatedly knocking it down and slowly depleting the Vulkan Bolla's HP bar until the boss fight is cleared.

Vulkan Bolla Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Hand Slam Vulkan Bolla reaches over and slams down its hand. This can affect the ground around the landing area and can follow up with a blast.  Dodge out of the landing area. You can also run toward the Vulkan Bolla during this maneuver to continue close-ranged attacks since the slam will be a distance away. There will be a wind-up to this attack which will also give you a chance to dodge it. If you are near the attack area, don't run too far since you can follow up by targeting the slammed hand after waiting for the action to complete before he begins his next attack.
Lava Puddles Vulkan Bolla leaves pools of lava in its path as it repositions around the arena.  Players can continue to attack its body prior to the maneuver, but just as it hoists its body out of the lava, you'll need to dodge out of the way to avoid getting caught in the drops of lava in its trail.
Magma ball Vulkan Bolla can spit out a large Magma ball that shoots in a linear path. There will be a marked red line to indicate the path before the fiery magma ball shoots out.  Dodge away from the direction of the attack if you're at a distance or begin to maneuver away from him as soon as it lowers its head. The mark indicating the path of the magma ball will appear before it shoots out, giving you a chance to move out of the path of the attack before the ball is released.
Magma Wash - Odium The Vulkan Bolla can flood out a section of the arena, covering it in magma. This will be marked beforehand with a pulsating wave. Puddles will also rain down as this attack is being excused.  As soon as the pulsing indicators appear, that is your sign to look for your nearest clear platform to evacuate to before lava starts to rain down followed by a flood that will engulf the whole marked section of the arena.
Lava Spew Vulkan Bolla Spews a stream of magma from its mouth in a sweeping motion covering a large section of the platform.  Players will have no choice but to run out of the affected area and look for any safe terrain.
Drag Vulkan Bolla can drag its body over the rock platforms to transfer to another open lava area. This will cause damage to those in its path.  As soon as it lifts, you will need to stay clear of its path until the position is set. You can head towards its new position to immediately begin attacking before its next attack.
Ball of Fire - Auxilium The part of the fight where magma rises and players will need to navigate around the platform islands to reach each part of the Vulkan Bolla before the bar is filled. Clear out the tail and claws to decrease the size of the fireball.
