Players encounter Gerasene while exploring the deserts of Dahli Relicbelt. Gerasene wields a large battleaxe and relies on large, heavy,  telegraphed attacks until he reaches Overdrive. When approaching Gerasene, watch for when he winds up his attacks or the angle he pulls back his axe. He will ready his axe before following through with a strike or a side swing which will be your cue to dodge to either side or step back from his general vicinity. His basic attacks include the overhead swing that targets the area ahead of him and a side Sweeping swing that has a larger range as he swings the axe in a semi-circle motion forcing you to back away if you're within the general vicinity to his front. The best position to avoid his attacks would be directly behind him. As a team, have your strong melee characters spread out so that he can focus ahead while someone keeps to his back. It's best to play offensively and aggressively as a team at the start of the fight before he goes into Overdrive. Take advantage of your Link attacks to further optimize damage output.

Some of his more advanced attacks have a wider range. When you see Gerasene start to flip his axe toward the ground as he charges his next attack, back your character up a little to prepare for an AoE attack. The general area of effect will be marked on the ground in a red circle. The further back you are, the higher the chances of avoiding getting hit. Once his axe hits the ground, it sends out a wave of dark energy. If you're quite a distance from Gerasene, you'll be able to weave through the gaps of this attack and immediately follow up with your own attacks during his recovery.

Once Gerasene hits Overdrive, stay clear of him for the initial part of Overdrive and wait for him to perform his flurry of AoE attacks. His attacks will have less of a charge-up animation and may be dealt immediately. A regular stomp attack will now have an Aoe surrounding him so be wary when you approach him in overdrive and play aggressively with the rest of your team when you do so you have a higher chance of interrupting his attacks. Be tactical with your approaches and watch the ground for indications of an upcoming AoE. He can deal a number of back-to-back AoE attacks and larger attacks while in overdrive, but you will have a brief moment to dodge out of the way as the indicators appear on the floor surrounding Gerasene before the follow-through. During his Overdrive phase, take the opportunity to attempt to do a successful chain burst by performing successive Skybound Arts with the whole party. This will speed up the process to his break after depleting the Mode bar and give you a long window to maximize your damage to clear the fight.

Gerasene Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Overhead Axe Strike A basic melee overhead swing of the axe that targets the area directly in front of him.  The attack affects a large target area so stay clear of the general direction of this attack.
Sweeping Swing A basic swing of the axe that starts from the side and almost swings a full circle around Gerasene Circle back behind him to avoid the swing, or generate some space between you and Gerasene.
Dark Shockwave AoE Gerasene takes a brief moment to charge up this attack, then a red circle marker will begin to expand on the ground, marking the initial area of effect. Once the axe hits the ground, the marked area will be briefly engulfed and a wave of dark energy will travel outwards.  As soon as this attack begins charging, this will be your cue to back out of the marked area. Once the axe hits the ground, look for gaps and openings between the wave of dark energy to continue approaching offensively.
Overdrive Stomp A regular stomp that is now accompanied with a large AoE radius surrounding Gerasene This is a quick attack without a wind up so it will be hard to anticipate. While Gerasene is in overdrive, be careful with your approaches.
Dark Spears AoE Gerasene can summon a set of spears from the ground in the area surrounding him. This is a telegraphed attack with a wind-up to allow you time to clear the area.  Watch for the start of the wind-up of this attack. He swings his axe in a circular motion above his head before striking it on the ground resulting in the AoE attack. Back up or dodge the area before the strike to avoid taking damage.
AoE Slam A leaping attack where Gerasene leaps in the area and lands on the ground resulting in the large AoE attack. The area of this attack will be marked with an expanding circle on the ground as soon as he lifts off the ground.  Watch for the markings that indicate the area of the effect and run out as it continues to expand before Gerasene hits the ground.
