Scarmiglione is encountered heading to Tredame Sanctum as players reach the door of seclusion. The fight begins immediately after the short scene. The objective here is to Protect Historiath, so glance over at Historiath once in a while throughout the fight. The fight with Scarmiglione begins at a distance, so you will need to be the one to initially approach him on the bridge. He may start with an attack where Scarmiglione spawns a few mobs such as the Lvl 3 Frosty Bones enemies. More mobs will continue to appear throughout the fight so be prepared to clear them out while keeping an eye on Scarmiglione and its Mode bar. Try to lure him toward you off the bridge so you will have more space during the fight. You will also be less likely to get caught in Scarmiglione's linear attacks.

Scarmiglione's set of attacks is generally telegraphed with a slow wind-up. Watch where he moves his arms to be able to anticipate the next action. Larger ranged attacks may have a mark on the floor for you to prepare your quick getaway before the attack follows through. As he raises his weapon before a slash or strike, make sure to move out of the way or dodge to the side to prepare for any follow-up or linear ranged attacks that accompany the melee attack. A brief pause will usually follow his attacks that will give you and your team a long window to do a great deal of damage during this period. During this fight, a few of the strongest members can stay pinned to Scarmiglione, while playing aggressively and stepping back when needed to avoid damage. Others can also focus on clearing any nearby mobs to keep them from damaging other members focused on the main boss before continuing to join them in attacking Scarmiglione.

During this encounter, Scarmiglion will likely be able to fill his Mode bar which will send him into overdrive and give him the ability to relentlessly deal a number of AoE combos that can spread radial outwards. While it is important to aggressively attack him during this period to deplete the Mode Bar, you will need to watch out of the range marking on the floor to avoid taking major damage, which could put you in a critical state. Wait for these large-range attacks to play out before taking your team and rushing back in to deplete the Mode Bar and cause him to enter Break giving you and your team an open window to deal all your attacks collectively. Save your Skybound Arts for a final blow. Have all members perform the Skybound Arts in succession. Throughout the fight, repeat the pattern of dodging the attack and waiting for the window that follows, then running in to deal a combo before his next attack all while clearing the surrounding mobs. Perform Link attacks as much as you can to trigger Link Time and unleash your powerful attacks. If he gets into overdrive again, make sure to Break it as soon as possible, and it will quickly consume a great deal of Scarmiglione's HP and eventually clear the fight. Make use of your Skybound Arts and follow up with a Chain Burst for maximum damage to quickly deplete his HP. Once the fight is cleared, the party is cleared to go through the door of seclusion.

Scarmiglione Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Frosty Backstep Sword Slash Scarmiglione takes a leap backward while bringing his sword down for a downward slash. This sends a frost crack forward in a line in the same direction as the slash. This attack is followed up with an ice shard attack that will follow the newly marked crack across the floor. Failing to avoid this attack can put characters in a frosted state.  You will need to sidestep from the direction of this attack as it is sent forward. This attack is followed by a long pause, which will give you a chance to approach and retaliate. Steer clear of the crack on the ground directly after this attack until the follow-up shards appear.
Frosty Bones Summon Scarmiglione summons a number of Frosty Bones Mobs.  These are low-level mobs that can easily be cleared as long as the team stays on top of it.
Ice Glacier AoE A radial Ice attack that forms a crystalized ice that will surround Scarmiglione. The area of effect is marked by a red circle that surrounds Scarmiglione indicating the range of this attack.  This is a telegraphed attack that can be anticipated as soon as Scarmiglione lifts his axe up in preparation to strike it on the ground. The red circle will also rapidly grow around him allowing you a brief moment to react and run out of the area of effect.
Side Swipe Scarmiglione brings his axe down to the ground on his side before dragging his axe through the snow for a quick swipe attack in a semi-circle. This attack covers a lot of the area around him, so if your character is anywhere near the vicinity ahead of Scarmiglione, watch for when he brings his axe down and this will be your cue to quickly dodge back before the follow-through.
Outward Frost Scarmiglione appears to absorb surrounding frost or energy in preparation for this attack before it blows out 4 frosty orbs surrounding him.  The frost that Scarmiglione expels will leave gaps in between for you to avoid contact or continue to approach and continue attacking.
AoE Blast Scarmiglione begins to hover over the ground as the red range indicating the size of the attack will begin to spread around him.  As much as possible, run out of range before the follow-through or prepare to take a high-damage attack.
Frost Orb Scarmiglione launches an orb in an arc which then lands on the ground and lingers.  The orb is slow-moving, which allows you to dodge away from the direction that its heading or landing. Continue to stay clear of the landing area until the orb patch is completely cleared up. While letting this play out, it will be safe to run in and continue attacking Scarmiglione directly.
